Based on your history, symptoms and goals the physician will make an informed decision on how to optimize your health and this may involve a number of aspects to treatment including medical management through the use of medicines as required, and referral to other health professionals.
Whilst it is not necessary to have a referral to see a Specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine, a referral from your General Practitioner (GP), or other medical practitioner, will qualify you for a Medicare rebate that will partly reimburse the cost of your consultation. Other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, can provide a referral but the Medicare rebate provided under this circumstance is slightly lower than when you have a medical referral.
Imaging and other investigations ordered by Specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians can usually be bulk-billed. However, the cost of the consultation is not bulk-billed.
