Dr Liam West is an experienced Specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physician who works as the Head Doctor of Hawthorn Football Club & Consultant SEM Physician for Melbourne CBD Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine Clinic. Liam has a wealth of experience due to his extensive involvement with Australian Rules Football, Athletics (Track and Field) and Football (Soccer) amongst other sporting codes, giving him expertise in a range of injuries involving bone, muscle, tendon and joints. As a medical professional Liam uses cutting-edge techniques to reduce the over-excessive use of medication and operations in the healthcare system that will ultimately result in a timely diagnosis and recovery from injury for all his patients whilst helping to also prevent reinjury during the process.
Originally hailing from England, Liam West moved to Melbourne to specialise in Sports Medicine in 2013. He holds a Bachelors of Sports Science, a Masters of Sports and Exercise Medicine, a Medical Degree and is a fellow of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians. When completing his medical degree, Liam felt that the SEM taught to students was lacking. To combat this, he created and chaired Cardiff University’s Sports & Exercise Medicine Society before helping to set up similar societies across numerous British Universities. He then went on to establish UK and also European wide societies which are both still active today. His passion for education continues to this day as he provides regular lectures and seminars to other healthcare practitioners on various SME topics.
Working closely with international sports teams, Liam provided his medical services at the 2018 & 2022 Commonwealth Games, most recently working as the Sports Doctor of the Australian Athletics Team. He has also worked with the U16 England National Football Team and the Australian Diamonds. Within Australian sport, he is the Head Sports Doctor with the Hawthorn Football Club, as well working on the executive committee of the AFL Doctors Association. As a semi-professional footballer (soccer) in his youth, he enjoys following his beloved Manchester United or playing footy. He also loves to get coffee with his wife and newborn baby boy at weekends.
