Questions about Sports Medicine

A Sports & Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physician is a medical specialist with advanced training in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injuries, sports-related conditions and the medical aspects of exercise. They have completed medical school followed by additional specialist training through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP), making them experts in non-surgical management of injury and performance.

At Melbourne CBD Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, our SEM Physicians work closely with our physiotherapists, podiatrists and dietitian to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care under one roof.

Sports Medicine doctors are medical practitioners, which means they can order imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT), request pathology, prescribe medication, and perform therapeutic injections. At our clinic we offer cortisone and Durolane injections, typically combined with local anaesthetic and performed under live ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement. They can also coordinate referrals to surgeons or other specialists when required.

Physiotherapy and sports medicine work hand-in-hand — many patients see both practitioners as part of an integrated treatment plan.

Our current consultation fees are:

Standard consultation (40 min): $350
Short consultation (20 min): $200

With a valid GP or specialist referral, a Medicare rebate applies to most consultations. Patients without a referral are still welcome to attend but will not be eligible for a rebate.

You do not need a referral to make an appointment, however a referral from your GP or another specialist is required if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate. The referral allows you to access the specialist Medicare item number, which provides a partial rebate on the consultation fee.

If you don’t have a GP or would prefer to see one online, telehealth services such as Hola Health, Instant Scripts and UpDoc offer GP consultations through which you can obtain a referral.

If you are unsure whether you need a referral or how to obtain one, please contact us and we can guide you through the process.

Our Sports Medicine team manages a broad range of conditions including acute sporting injuries (ligament, muscle, tendon), overuse and tendinopathy presentations, stress fractures and bone stress injuries, joint pain (knee, shoulder, hip, ankle), concussion assessment and management, adolescent sports injuries and growth-related conditions, and performance and return-to-sport planning.

Not necessarily. Imaging and injections are only recommended when they will change management. Your Sports Medicine doctor will explain the rationale for any investigation or procedure and discuss the alternatives with you before proceeding.

Questions about Podiatry

No referral is required for a private podiatry appointment. However, if you have a chronic condition you may be eligible for subsidised care under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan organised by your GP. A small number of subsidised visits per calendar year are available under this program.

For private health insurance, podiatry is generally claimable under “extras” cover — please check with your insurer for your specific rebate.

Yes. We offer detailed biomechanical and running assessments to identify movement patterns that may be contributing to injury or limiting performance. Assessments may include video analysis, joint range of motion testing, strength testing and footwear review.

Findings are used to guide treatment, footwear advice, exercise prescription and — where indicated — orthotic therapy.

Podiatrists are university-qualified, registered allied health professionals who diagnose and manage conditions of the foot, ankle and lower limb. At Melbourne CBD Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine Clinic our podiatry focus is biomechanical and sports-related — assessing the way you walk, run and load your lower limbs, and treating injuries and conditions that arise from these patterns.

Common presentations include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, stress fractures, forefoot pain, and heel pain in adolescents and adults.

No. Orthotics are one tool among many and are not appropriate for every patient. We only prescribe orthotics where the assessment indicates they will provide a clear benefit, and we always combine them with rehabilitation, footwear advice and load management.

Our current consultation fee is $160 for a standard appointment (30 min). Orthotic prescription, manufacture and review are charged separately and will be discussed with you at the time of assessment.

For private health insurance, podiatry is generally claimable under “extras” cover — please check with your insurer for your specific rebate.

Yes. We see children and adolescents with growth-related conditions such as Sever’s disease, as well as those with biomechanical concerns, sports injuries or footwear issues.

Questions about Sports Dietitian

Our current consultation fees are:

Initial consultation (60 min): $280
Review consultation (30 min): $185
Personalised meal plan (optional add-on): $225

Rebates may apply via Medicare CDM plans (with a GP referral) or your private health fund.

This varies depending on your goals. Many patients benefit from an initial consultation followed by 2–3 review appointments to refine the plan as their training, body or goals evolve. Athletes preparing for events or in active rehab may see the dietitian more frequently across a defined period.

No referral is required for a private appointment. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, you may be eligible for a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan via your GP, which provides up to 5 subsidised dietitian visits per calendar year.

Most private health funds also offer rebates on dietitian visits under “extras” cover — please check with your insurer.

Yes. A personalised meal plan is available as an optional add-on to any dietitian consultation for $225. Your dietitian will tailor the plan to your training schedule, food preferences, lifestyle and goals — it is not a generic template. The meal plan is provided in addition to your consultation and can be a useful reference tool between appointments.

A sports dietitian is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) with additional training and experience in sports nutrition. They translate the science of nutrition into practical, individualised eating plans for active people — whether you’re training for a goal event, recovering from injury, managing body composition, or simply trying to fuel your training and life better.

Our dietitian works alongside our physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors and podiatrists to support recovery, performance and overall health.

Your initial consultation is a thorough assessment of your training load, current eating patterns, medical history, body composition goals and lifestyle. Your dietitian will work with you to develop a practical, personalised plan — not a generic meal plan. You’ll leave with clear next steps and tools to start applying immediately.

All sports dietitians are first qualified dietitians, meaning they can manage the full range of medical nutrition therapy (e.g. diabetes, gut health, cardiovascular health, weight management). The additional sports qualification means they also specialise in fuelling for training and competition, recovery nutrition, hydration, supplements, and the unique nutritional demands of injury and rehabilitation.

Questions about Women's Health Physiotherapy

Yes. We see women across pregnancy and the post-natal period for a range of concerns including pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, abdominal separation (DRAM), pelvic floor recovery, return-to-running and return-to-exercise programs.

No referral is required to see a Women’s Health Physiotherapist. However, if you have been referred by your GP, obstetrician or specialist, please bring any relevant correspondence or imaging to your appointment.

Our current consultation fees are:

Consultant Physiotherapist
60 min: $410 | 30 min: $210

Senior Physiotherapist
60 min: $390 | 30 min: $190

Physiotherapist
60 min: $310 | 30 min: $170

Your treating physiotherapist level will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on the pelvic floor, abdominal wall, and conditions specific to women across all life stages. Our Women’s Health physiotherapists have additional postgraduate training in this area.

Common conditions treated include pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain, post-natal recovery, and return-to-exercise after childbirth.

Your first appointment is a thorough assessment that includes a discussion of your concerns, history, goals and any relevant medical background. Your physiotherapist will explain any examination steps before they happen and only proceed with your informed consent. Internal examination is sometimes the most accurate way to assess pelvic floor function but is never compulsory — alternatives can always be discussed.
