Plantar Heel Pain
Plantar fascia pain is the most commonly reported cause of inferior heel pain. Your plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of connective tissue originating on the bottom surface of the calcaneus (heel bone) and extending along the sole of the foot towards the toes. Plantar fascia is diagnosed by pain on palpation over the calcaneal origin as well as thickening of the plantar fascia itself. This injury or condition is very prevalent in long distance runners (8% of injuries) and women over the age of 40. Patients with this presentation can often describe the pain coming on over time, that is worse in the morning but gets better after walking and “warming it up”.
Many treatments have been researched for the management of plantar fascia. With our physiotherapists working with some of Australia’s best track and field distance runners, they are at the forefront of the management of this condition to ensure a fast recovery.
