In case you’re late to the party, Melbourne has a really cool bouldering and climbing community. Be it in the CBD, inner suburbs like Richmond or Collingwood, or in the outers of Oakleigh these unique gyms are really cementing themselves. Now when I say gym this is not your typical weight training facility, this is a “gym” for people who wish to embrace their free spirit, be stronger through climbing, with the option of really becoming a human spider.
As I write this I sit under a climber dangling two meters above the ground with all four limbs clasping onto some unforgiving holds. Words of encouragement are constant from bystanders and the vibe in the place is, pardon the pun, rocking.
With perfect view you can see how demanding this sport really is, and look a little further you can understand why people get addicted: friendly and almost family like environment, accepting of all comers and levels of skill, with the gyms being accessible all year round.
So I thought I might share the little secret on some cool Melbourne locations in case this sport might be appealing to you, as after all, wouldn’t it be nice to be strong for a particular reason and then have fun maintaining it in a kick-arse kind of a way?
